The BioGreen

Bridging the gap between academic theory and environmental action for a greener tomorrow.

Our Story

BioGreen is an initiative started by Dr Nagamani Bora at the University of Nottingham in 2018 with a critical question: How can experiential education empower students to transition from understanding sustainability to leading its implementation? She devised learning approaches to engage students from Plastic Waste Reduction to the circular economy-focused Grains to Greens project (repurposing brewers' spent grains as fertiliser), where students are placed at the helm of every stage—from experimental design to community engagement. The aim of the project is to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world action-based learning. The approach transforms the campus into a living laboratory. Today, BioGreen is more than an initiative; it is a platform for empowerment. By tackling tangible challenges like waste reduction and sustainable agriculture, our students develop the confidence and technical skills to shape the future—transitioning from observers of sustainability to active leaders of change.

Values

  • Experiential Learning: We believe the most profound understanding comes from doing. We prioritize hands-on, real-world application over purely theoretical study.
  • Student Agency & Ownership: We empower students to take initiative and responsibility for their projects, fostering leadership and self-reliance.
  • Real-World Impact & Relevance: Our work is grounded in addressing genuine, current sustainability challenges, ensuring our education is meaningful and consequential.
  • Critical Thinking & Adaptability: We cultivate the ability to analyze complex problems, challenge assumptions, and develop flexible, innovative solutions.
  • Social Responsibility & Ethical Action: We are committed to developing graduates who act with integrity, empathy, and a deep sense of duty to their communities and the planet.
  • Collaboration & Community: We value peer-to-peer learning and believe that the most significant challenges are solved through diverse, cooperative effort.
  • Empowerment & Confidence: We strive to build each student's belief in their own ability to effect positive change.

Update 6th March 2026

Our team recently prepared the plots by digging and removing weeds, while also collecting brewer’s spent grains, beans, and other materials we plan to use for the experiment. With planting scheduled in the coming weeks, we may also be introducing a third organic input to expand the study.
